I’ve always liked PMC speakers, and those in the Playback Distribution room, the new transmission line Prophecy9 speakers ($15,999/pair), were no exception. Top dog in the company’s Prophecy line, these speakers make sound—chunky, impactful, structured—that belies their slim, 3’4”-high stature.
The speakers were fronting a system that included a Rotel Michi X5 integrated amp ($9999) fed by a Silent Angel combo of M1 network streamer/DAC ($1600) and Forester F1 linear power supply (from $780). Also demoed but not playing in my presence was an Avid Ingenium Plug & Play turntable / arm / cartridge bundle (from $2599). Cabling was by Esprit.
Again, due to the speakers’ relatively compact size, I didn’t expect this much sound. The system delivered scale, drama, detail, extended highs, solid bass, and full-bodied images imbued with densely filled tone and finely corrugated texture.
