Talk about bang for your buck. Here’s a system that cost a little north of $15,000—not including the cables and power supply—and sounded much better than its price would suggest. The system consisted of just two audio components: a pair of the brand new GoldenEar T44 speakers (from $5999.98), which combine passive tweeter and midrange drivers with an active, DSP-controlled powered bass section, and the just released Moon by Simaudio 371 streaming amplifier ($8800) which I wrote about here.
If you want to get picky, the AudioQuest cabling and Niagara 3000 power conditioner in use cost more than the speakers and amp/streamer combined—but that’s another matter. The speakers and electronics are, after all, what produce the sound.
And what sound: tactile and holographic, with pinpoint imaging, a wide and deep soundstage, good bass, and plenty of room-filling harmonics. It all added up to the kind of experience that made me think, damn, that’s a lot of audiophile sound for not a lot of money.
