In 2014, Denon launched a bold experiment: a new wireless audio platform, HEOS, short for Home Entertainment Operating System. What began as a small lineup of networked speakers has since evolved into one of the most trusted, integrated, and performance-driven systems in premium audio. Now entering its second decade, HEOS has become a standard in itself. And with a firmware update rolling out on September 17, the platform enters a new chapter, with a new name to mark its evolution: Powered by HEOS™.

A Timeline of Progress

2014 – Foundational Launch
Denon debuts HEOS with three wireless speakers: HEOS 3, 5, and 7. These products introduce multi-room streaming via dual-band Wi-Fi and a proprietary mobile app, targeting ease of use without sacrificing fidelity.

2015 – Ecosystem Expansion
HEOS 1 and the optional Go Pack introduce portability, while the HomeCinema sound bar/subwoofer combo brings TV audio into the wireless fold. Streaming services like TIDAL and iHeartRadio are integrated.

2016 – High-Resolution Audio and Bluetooth
Second-generation HEOS devices (HS2) arrive, adding Bluetooth, hi-res audio playback (up to 24-bit/192kHz), and 5GHz Wi-Fi for enhanced performance.

2017–2018 – Full AV Integration
HEOS becomes embedded in Denon’s X- and S-Series AV receivers, and later in Marantz and Classé products. The world’s first 13.2-channel AVR is launched with native HEOS support.

2019–2023 – Platform Maturation
The ecosystem grows across multiple categories, including integrated amps and multi-channel soundbars. Firmware updates refine app control, expand streaming options, and optimize performance.

2024–2025 – Rebranding and Firmware Evolution
HEOS is reintroduced under the “Powered by HEOS™” identity. The September 2025 firmware release introduces a redesigned app experience, user profile support, improved network stability, and an enhanced onboarding flow.
