Toronto Audiofest 2024: Burmester & SPL-KEF-Stable 33.33-Luna

BURMESTER

We were warmly welcomed by Simon Pope, a seasoned expert with 16 years at Burmester, who captivated us with stories of the company’s rich heritage. Burmester, founded in 1977, is still proudly family-owned and synonymous with luxury, gracing the interiors of prestigious cars like Porsche, Mercedes, Ferrari, and Bugatti.

Burmester speakers have a sound that is both warm and generous, beautifully balancing precision with emotional depth. The listening session was nothing short of transcendent. From the rich tones of Elton John’s “Roy Rogers” to the cinematic breadth of the “Prologue” from West Side Story, and the evocative textures of Illinois Jacquet’s “Harlem Nocturne,” it felt as though the saxophonist himself was playing in the room with us. The sound was so enveloping, it felt like we were inside the performance, completely immersed in the experience.

To top it off, Francis Choinière, Conductor and Artistic Director of Orchestre Philharmonic et Choeur des Mélomanes and of Orchestre FILMharmonique, graced us with a moving piano concert, debuting a new piece from his latest album. The clarity and presence of each note were astonishing. It was an unforgettable encounter with pure sonic artistry.

It’s a marvelous day for a performance by Anne Bisson

It was on a magnificent sunny day in Toronto that we were completely captivated by Montreal jazz singer Anne Bisson, accompanying herself on the piano. Her vibrant blue outfit, mirroring the sky, reflected her equally lively personality. She began with a track from her album Keys to My Heart, “Slip Into My Limousine,” followed by a soulful rendition of “Moondance,” from her latest album Be My Lover. Her voice struck a delicate balance between softness and power, effortlessly drawing us in. Her presence was magnetic, exuding both confidence and charm.

Anne shared a touching personal story about her days at boarding school, and how the two-hour car rides with her father were filled with music—mostly classical pieces and Elvis. On one cassette, there was a particular song she always asked her dad to replay: “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” which she performed beautifully. She then played a recording of “Blue Bayou,” and the clarity of the Burmester speakers brought the music to life with such precision. Anne jokingly remarked, “Sounds like I’m in the room, doesn’t it?”—though, of course, she was.

To close, she gracefully stood and sang along to her own recording, creating the surreal illusion of two Anne Bissons performing in perfect harmony. It was a breathtaking moment, and truly, it couldn’t have gotten any better than that.

Anne Bisson also graced the Burmester Room with a beautiful intimate performance.

SPL-KEF-STABLE 33.33-LUNA

The atmosphere of the room is infused with the bold and striking tones of the scarlet red and pitch-black Kef Blade II speakers. These vibrant colors, reminiscent of a ladybug, reflect in the elegant and modern ambiance of the room, creating a harmonious visual and sonic experience. The Luna cables, discreet yet essential, create a perfect connection between the Stable 33.33 turntable and each component of the SPL system powering it, ensuring uncompromised sonic purity.

It’s almost unbelievable that a vinyl can resonate with such depth and clarity, revealing nuances that seemed impossible to perceive. No matter where one stands in the room, the sound remains consistent. The music, carefully selected by Danny Labrecque (Luna Cables), gently envelops us, creating an intoxicating sensation that invites one to linger, allowing the hours to pass as though suspended in a timeless sonic cocoon.
